Jonathann Daval in prison: work, physical transformation and legal proceedings… what we know about his life in Ensisheim

Almost a decade has passed since Jonathann Daval's arrest. Sentenced in November 2020 to 25 years in prison for the murder of his wife Alexia, he is serving his sentence at the Ensisheim prison in Alsace. Between revelations from his mother, a striking physical transformation, and legal twists and turns, the daily life of one of France's most high-profile prisoners continues to fascinate.

A life behind bars, rhythmic and structured.

After a period in solitary confinement at the Dijon prison, Jonathann Daval was transferred to Ensisheim in May 2021. There, his daily life gradually became more organized. It was his mother, Martine Henry, who revealed this in her book *Me, Jonathann's Mother*, published in 2022.

She reveals that her son works in prison, from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and then from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. His task? Assembling spools of electrical extension cords. This activity reportedly earns him around 600 euros per month, part of which is given to the civil parties and set aside for his future reintegration.

Outside of work, sport plays an important role in his days. And according to prison guards and his lawyer, Randall Schwerdorffer, Jonathann Daval is described as a model prisoner.

A physical transformation that did not go unnoticed.

It was in May 2024, during his appearance at the Besançon criminal court, that observers noticed a striking change. Gone was the shifty gaze and subdued figure of the Vesoul trial. The former computer technician appeared noticeably more muscular, self-assured, transformed.

“Physically, he has completely transformed. He expressed himself very well,” his lawyer confided after the hearing. This evolution, Mr. Schwerdorffer attributes to an “exemplary record” and “genuine self-reflection.” The intensive exercise he practiced in prison appears to have played a central role in this metamorphosis.
